The Long Shot Candidate-Mike Gravel

I believe that democrats and republicans alike should check out one of the candidates for president they might not have heard of. This is former Alaska Senator Maurice (Mike) Gravel, whose seat is now held by Sen. Murkowski, whose husband defeated him in 1981 as Alaska began to become a republican stronghold. Recently Sen. Gravel spoke to the DNA and chastised his democratic opponents who voted for the war.

"The Democrats controlled the Senate in October 2002, and provided cover for the President to invade Iraq... Political calculations trumped reality, and the Middle East was set ablaze. It was politics as usual. Anyone who voted for the war on October 11, 2002, based on what President Bush presented to them, is not qualified to hold the office of President of the United States."

When he served in the senate, he was a primary democrat who opposed government secrecy, the Vietnam War and Watergate. His website touts that,

“In 1971, he waged a successful one-man filibuster for five months that forced the Nixon administration to cut a deal, effectively ending the draft in the United States.”

His candidacy for President is mainly revolved around his support for a system similar to the state run proposition system, only on a federal level. This is commonly called, “The National Initiative”, and is also known as Direct Democracy. Gravel also supports the abolition of the IRS with a national sales tax of 22% as a replacement. A single-payer national health care system, term limits and immediate withdrawal from Iraq are some of the other proposals he supports. His website is: www.gravel2008.com and although he’ll probably never pose a big threat to Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, he will appear at the debates and will shift the focus on subjects that will challenge the current front runners.

Just googling Mike Gavel won't take you near his website, so I recommend going to wikipedia and typing in Presidential Candidates, clicking on the link to a page listing all the democrats who are running. From there, simply click on his name next to his photo and then go down to the link to his website gavel2008.us
Hope that works! On his site, he has a couple of videos and he also has a bunch on youtube
Enjoy!

How ironic that this article sits next to a poll that asks who you support in '08, and fails to include Mike Gravel in the choices.

He's a serious contender, and deserves serious attention.

we wish we could include new candidates in our poll at this time, however, it would require that this particular poll be reproduced with no votes. As soon as we get the chance, we will update it. Thanks for your comment...

What do you mean, 'probaby won't pose a threat to Hilary or Obama' ? WHY NOT? If he doesn't have a fair shot at it, just like them, then they ought to just remove Gravel right now. But that would be too outright and obvious.

If you're a idiot candidate with lots of money for ADVERTISING YOURSELF, you're no better off than a financially poor candidate with strong, positive views.

Leaving Mike Gravel off your poll is really short sighted. You people want to know who the American people want to vote for. Then you had better post all those running. And especially a real statesmen like Mike Gravel. Your going to look real stupid when he gets elected over all the tripe your pushing on us.
